Textile vertical burning test experiment and principle1

Vertical burning test Test standard: ASTM D6413, DOC-FF 3/71, CALIF TB-117, GB/T5455, CPAI-84 Test principle: Use the flame generated by the specified igniter to ignite the center of the bottom edge of the sample in the vertical direction, After the specified ignition time, measure the afterburning time, smoldering time and damage length of the sample. The composition of instruments and equipment and the coordination of various components: 1. The test box has ventilation holes specified in the standard on the side and top of the box. The door of the box should be embedded with transparent refractory glass, so that the tester can observe the burning condition of the sample. 2. Sample fixture and its fixing device. The sample fixture is provided with barbs, which are hung on the sample fixture bracket on the upper part of the box body, and a fixing device is also provided in the middle of the box body to ensure that the sample is maintained in the vertical direction. 3. Ignition timing system. The ignition timing system of the instrument is independent of the test chamber. Different standards, the control of ignition time is different. One is to control the time of gas introduction. After reaching the time specified by the standard, the gas is turned off and the external combustion is stopped. One is to move the flame position. After the standard ignition time, the flame position is far away from the sample. 4. The timing device is to start the timing manually. The test is to observe the surface state of the fabric, and press the switch to start the timing. Test process: Take GB/T 5455-2014 as an example to introduce the test process of vertical combustion test. 1. Close the front door of the test box, open the gas supply valve, light the igniter, and adjust the flame height. After burning for a certain period of time, extinguish the flame (exclude the air in the pipe). 2. The dried sample is loaded into the fixture, and the sample should be as flat as possible. Hang the upper end of the sample clip on the bracket, and the side is fixed by the sample clip fixing device. 3. Close the box door, light the igniter, and after the flame is stable, move the flame to just below the sample. 4. After the ignition time, remove the igniter, turn on the timer, and record the afterburning time and smoldering time. Record the burning condition of the sample at any time. 5. Turn on the fan or fume hood to remove the smoke. 6. Open the door of the box, take out the sample, and hang a weight on one end of the fabric to test the damaged length. The test method is shown in the figure. Fold a straight line along the highest point of the damaged area in the length direction of the sample, and then hang the selected weight on the bottom side of the sample, about 6mm from the bottom edge and the side edge, and then slowly lift the test by hand. On the other side of the lower end of the sample, let the weight hang in the air, then put it down, measure and record the tearing length of the sample, which is the damage length, accurate to 1mm. Matters needing attention: 1. The combustion of textiles may produce smoke and toxic gases that affect the health of operators. The test personnel should wear gas masks. The test can be completed in a fume hood. Smoke and soot shall be excluded after each test. 2. The ventilation system should be closed when the sample is burning to avoid affecting the test results. 3. When testing fabrics made of fusible fibers, if the tested sample has molten droplets during the combustion process, 10mm thick absorbent cotton should be laid on the bottom of the test box, and record whether the absorbent cotton has burning or smoldering phenomenon .
