A Complete Comparison of Abrasion Test Methods, Applications, Standards and Selection Guide

DIN Abrasion Tester vs Taber Abraser: What Is the Difference?

When testing the abrasion resistance of materials, people are often unsure whether to choose a DIN abrasion tester or a Taber abrasion tester.

Upfront test suitability, specimen shape limits, applicable industry standards and maintenance workflows create clear gaps between the two instruments. This post fully compares their core characteristics, applications, technical specs, standard compliance, operation features and practical pros and cons to help you pick the right abrasion tester for your lab testing requirements.

DIN Abrasion Tester vs Taber Abraser: What Is the Difference? 1

What are DIN Abrasion Tester & Taber Abrasion Resistance Test Machine?

DIN Abrasion Tester GT-KB03 is used to determine wear performance test & din abrasion test of materials like elastic material, rubber, tires, conveyor belts, conveyor belts, shoe soles.

Taber Abrasion Resistance Test Machine GT-C14A is used to determine the wear resistance of materials and assess its wear resistance degree, like measuring its mass loss, thickness loss, and transmittance etc.

Core Test Mechanism & Specimen Contact Mode

Core Test Mechanism Specimen Contact Mode

The working abrasion mechanism differs fundamentally between DIN Abrasion Tester and Taber Type Abrasion Tester.

DIN Abrasion Tester adopts a rotary drum design. Sandpaper is fully wrapped around the outer surface of the cylindrical roller. Under fixed contact pressure and defined contact area, the sample is positioned at a set fixed angle against the sandpaper roller. The machine is fitted with a digital counter to automatically cut power once the preset test cycle completes.

Taber Type Abrasion Tester uses a unique dual abrasive wheel wear workflow. Flat test specimens are fixed onto a rotating turntable, while two weighted abrasive wheels press vertically onto the material surface to produce cyclic surface friction. The tester supports two adjustable turntable speeds: 60 rpm and 72 rpm. Standard precision steel weights (250g and 750g) match the abrasion arm’s base 250g weight to deliver total wheel loads of 500g and 1000g, with clear load marking on all weights for quick reference. Operators can swap different abrasive media and auxiliary accessories to match diverse flat material testing needs.

Applicable Test Specimen Types

Applicable-Test-Specimen-Types

DIN Abrasion Tester GT-KB03 is limited to elastic, flexible and cylindrical curved samples. Typical test materials include raw elastic materials, various rubber compounds, tire rubber, industrial conveyor belts and shoe sole materials. It cannot deliver accurate, repeatable results on thin flat coatings, rigid flat panels or textiles.

Taber Abrasion Resistance Test Machine GT-C14A exclusively serves flat finished products with uniform planar surfaces. Its wide material coverage includes suitcases, carpets, cardboard, woven clothing fabrics, glass sheets, plastic coatings, metal surface coatings, paint and varnish layers, decorative high-pressure laminates, rigid plastic panels, textiles, flexible floor mats, road traffic paint, ceramic tiles, anodized metal layers, blankets, electronic component casings, decorative plates, surface wax coatings, adhesive labels, natural and synthetic leather, dental composite materials, automotive interior trim, resin sheets and furniture surface finishes.

Standard Compliance List

DIN Abrasion Tester GT-KB03 supports the following global industry test standards:

DIN-53516, JIS-K6369, JIS K6264-2, GB/T 20991 section 8.3, GB/T 20265, GB20266-2006, GB/T 9867, EN ISO 20344-2021 section 8.3, AS/NZS 2210.2 section 8.3, ISO 4649, BS903-A9 Method A, ASTM D5963, ISO20871, QB/T2884, EN 12770

Taber Type Abrasion Tester GT-C14A complies with an independent set of coating, textile and flat material abrasion standards:

ASTM D3884, ASTM D1175, ASTM D1044, ASTM D4060, ASTM D4685, DIN 52347, DIN 53109, DIN 53754, DIN 53799, JIS K7204, JIS A1453, JIS K6902, JIS L1096, JIS K6964, TAPPI T476, ISO 9352, ISO 5470-1, SATRA TM163

Core Feature Comparison

Core-Feature-Comparison

DIN Abrasion Tester Key Features

Full body adopts baking paint surface treatment, reducing dust accumulation and simplifying daily equipment maintenance.

Built-in digital cycle counter; the unit automatically stops operation once the pre-set abrasion test cycle finishes.

Fixed contact pressure and contact area are maintained during testing; the sample sits at a fixed angle against sandpaper wrapped around the roller to generate standardized abrasion force.

The pressed sample moves laterally along the rotating sandpaper roller for even material wear across the testing surface.

Taber Abrasion Resistance Test Machine Key Features

Exclusive dual-wheel rotary wear structure: flat specimens mount on a turntable, with two abrasive wheels pressing vertically to create consistent cyclic surface abrasion.

Dual adjustable turntable rotation speeds: 60 rpm and 72 rpm for matching different standard test requirements.

Supplied with precision calibrated steel weights (250 grams and 750 grams). Combined with the 250-gram base weight of each abrasion arm, the system delivers standard total wheel loads of 500 grams and 1000 grams, with clear load labels printed on all weights.

Highly flexible testing compatibility; users can interchange multiple abrasive media and specialized auxiliary accessories to complete varied flat-surface abrasion evaluations.

Operation & Testing Performance

DIN Abrasion Tester delivers stable, repeatable test data for rubber and elastic curved samples. The enclosed roller structure minimizes external dust interference during long-duration abrasion cycles. However, it has strict specimen geometry limits: only cylindrical rubber or elastic test pieces are compatible, so it cannot replace Taber Abrasion Resistance Test Machine for flat coating and textile analysis. Sample preparation requires precise cylindrical cutting, which adds extra pre-processing time before testing.

Taber Abrasion Resistance Test Machine provides universal flat-material abrasion testing capability with adjustable speed and variable load weights to align with hundreds of international coating and textile standards. Flat sample cutting and mounting are fast and straightforward for most sheet, fabric and coated panel materials. Its open turntable and wheel structure makes abrasive residue cleanup frequent, and abrasive wheel surfaces wear quickly when testing hard rigid materials, requiring regular wheel replacement to preserve test accuracy.

Lab Safety & Operation Considerations

Both abrasion testers require strict lab operation protocols to avoid testing hazards. Operators must ensure the sample is firmly clamped before startup; loose cylindrical specimens may eject during roller rotation and cause impact injuries. Replacing the roller’s sandpaper also requires power cut-off to prevent accidental contact with moving rotating parts.

Taber Abraser’s open turntable generates large volumes of fine coating, plastic and textile dust during continuous testing. Operators must wear dust masks and run ventilation systems while the machine operates. Overloading the abrasive wheels beyond marked weight limits may damage the test arm bearings and skew test results. When swapping abrasive wheels or accessories, power must be disconnected to avoid pinching injuries between wheels and rotating turntable.

Conclusion

Your final selection between the two instruments depends on three core factors: the geometry and material type of your test specimens, the industry test standards you need to comply with, and your daily lab testing throughput requirements for curved elastic products versus flat coated panels.
